eToro tutorial for beginners (2023) – How to buy and sell stocks, cryptos and ETFs, step by step

What is eToro?

eToro is a great trading platform for investing in more than 3000 assets.
To me is the best trading platform for beginners.
I have been using it for the past 6 years, since 2017.

On eToro you can invest in stocks, cryptos and ETFs.

Community

eToro is not just a trading platform; it works like social media, where you can message other users and also share trading ideas.

Copy Trading

If you are a beginner, I recommend using the Copy Trading functionality, which you can use to copy automatically all the trades of a professional investor.

As an alternative, you can also invest in Smart Portfolios, based on specific sectors.

More than 25 million users around the world are using eToro for investing and trading.
It’s a regulated company and it’s secure to use.

Registration

The first thing to do is to register on the platform.
I recommend doing this process from your computer, if you can.
If you don’t have a computer you can still do it from the browser on your smartphone.
Click on the link in the description of the video, fill in your details and click on
“Create account”.

Login

Once you have completed the registration, confirm your email address and access to the eToro website using your username and password.

Deposit

Click on the “Deposit Funds” button, insert the amount you want to deposit, select your currency and choose your preferred payment method.
Once your payment is confirmed, you can see the amount deposited at the bottom of the Portfolio page. Now you are ready to invest.

Verify your account

Since you are a new user, only the first time, you will need to provide some personal information to verify your identity.
Once you submit your answers, the eToro team will verify your info and approve your account (it might take a few days).
In the meantime, you should be able to start investing up to 2000 EUR.
After the verification, you can deposit additional funds without limits.

Profile

On eToro, every user has a profile page with all the information about their performance and the details of their portfolio.
This is my profile page.

Search an asset

You can use the search bar at the top of the web page to find any asset, in this example, I am looking for bitcoin.

Asset Page

For every asset, you can see the performance, all the stats, the chart, the analysis and the latest news.
You can add them to your watchlist and when you are ready to trade click on the “Invest” button.

Buy and Sell

On this screen you can see the price of Bitcoin and, at the top of the page, you can select BUY or SELL.
You can choose to BUY if you think that the price will go up or to SELL if you think that the price will go down.

Trade or Order

If you select “Trade” or “Market” it means that you are going to BUY or SELL at the current price.
If you select “Order” you can choose at which price you want to BUY or SELL.

Stop Loss

Anyway, you can set up a stop loss, that will close automatically your trade in case you are losing.
You can set the stop to a specific price (or rate) or to a specific amount of money.
Click on “No SL” if you don’t want to set a stop loss.

Take Profit

You can also set a Take Profit, which will close your position automatically if the price reaches the target you indicated.
You can set a specific asset price or the total amount of profit.
Click on “No TP” if you don’t want to set a take profit.
If you are investing for the long term you can disable the stop loss and the take profit and you can close the position manually whenever you want.

Leverage

If you select Leverage X1, it means that you are buying the real underlying asset.
If you select a higher leverage, for example, X2, you are using a CFD (a contract for difference) that will allow you to double your profit, but also double your losses, while investing the same amount of money.
Please note that if you use leverage, you will be charged daily and weekly fees, while the trade remains open.

Portfolio

You can see the list of all the positions open on the Portfolio page.
For each trade, it shows all the information, like the entry price, the total amount invested and the profit or loss, in real-time.
On the bottom of the page, you can see the total cash available to invest, the amount invested, your total profit or loss and the total value of your portfolio.

Copy trade

If you want to copy a popular investor, search on the Discover page or type the name in the search bar.
Then click on the “Copy” button.

Copy Trading does not amount to investment advice. The value of your investments may go up or down. Your capital is at risk.

Choose the amount you want to invest, make sure the “Copy Open Trades” option is selected and click on “Invest”.
Great. Now you are copying a popular investor automatically.

Withdraw

If you want to withdraw funds, first of all, you need to close some or all of your positions.
Then from the menu, click on “Withdraw Funds”.
Choose the amount to withdraw and submit.
Please note that if you have a low amount invested you will have to pay a $5 fee.
The minimum amount is $30.

Mobile Apps

Once you are registered, you can also download the eToro mobile app, so you can check your portfolio and also make trades directly from your phone.
